The prompts )

Day Twenty-One: Favorite female character screwed over by canon I choose Libby from Lost and every Lost fan knows why. With her the writers dangled one of the most interesting plot hooks in the show's history in front of the viewer only to come out and literally say later that they had simply decided not to do it anymore. On a show as big and intricate as Lost it's impossible not to have some things get shelved permanently, but in Libby's case it was was over the top. And yes they sort of addressed it in the show's last few episodes, enough to give closure to what they'd created anyway, but it was nowhere near as satisfying as what could have been.

HONORABLE MENTION: LEGEND OF THE FIVE RINGS - L5R screwed over pretty much EVERY character involved during its notorious Hidden Emperor story arc but the heavy-hitting female leads got it worst of all. Bayushi Kachiko, at one point the game setting's primary viewpoint character/antagonist was revealed to have a kharmic link to a demigod in the setting. This got shuffled into the background and dealt with in an afterthought short fiction that wasn't even publicized. The list goes one, full of names no one recognizes: Isawa Ozuki, Doji Shizue, Daidoji Rekai, Shiba Tsukune. Just trust me when I say each one had enough awesome to be the hero of an epic novel series of her own and each one got swept under the rug in the scope of conflict that made no sense and was barely explained.

Day Twenty-Two: Favorite female character you love but everyone else hates - If I'm lucky enough to like a piece of fiction that other people I know do we usually all like the same things. However, I read on TV Tropes that apparently the Pirates of the Caribbean fandom loathes Elizabeth Swan for the mere fact that she exists and therefore gets in the way of all their little boy-on-boy fanfic fantasies about the male leads. Too bad fandom! She's a lady pirate and you know how I feel about those. Eilizabeth's a bad ass and she's here to stay so all you little fanfic girls can take your Jack Sparrows and Will Turners and suck it. I know you want to anyway.

Couldn't get to sleep last night for some reason. Then when I finally did get to sleep I kept waking up. When I did sleep I had very immersive dreams, one of which was about LOST.

Cut in case you don't care about dreams or Lost. )

In case you're wondering, I haven't seen the Lost premier in its entirity yet so no spoilers.

The tiredness is catching up. I've been pretty peppy all morning, but now I'm starting to feel the lack of sleep.

Just this morning it clicked with me that the presidential inauguration is tomorrow. It just kind of snuck up on me. Hear about a thing so much and it just fades into the background. It doesn't interest me though. I'm more interested in what presidents do once they're in office than their investitures. I'm much more excited about the premier of Lost on Wednesday.

MLK day so the building is deserted.  A nice bit of quiet before I have to sit with my new trainee all day tomorrow. I hate training people, but thankfully I just have the one day of it. Still, it makes for a long day.

So everyone who has ever liked comic books, video games, or anything like that has at one time played the stupid game of Could So-and-So Kick Such-and-Such's Ass in a Fight. People do this all the time with their favorite characters, but I don't think I've ever seen it done with anyone's favorite sentient places. So I created this poll. The island of Lost vs. the town of Silent Hill. Go. [Poll #1185237][Poll #1185237

This week's LOST... was freaking intense. Rather high on the body count factor too. OMG they killed... )

What follows is a list mainly for my own reference...

Movies I want to see this summer:

Deception
Prince Caspian
Iron Man
Wolverine
Indiana Jones
The Dark Knight

Hellboy... eh, maybe... I was never a fan of the comic, but I caught the first one on TNT a while back and was pleasantly surprised.

My office has left me with a shift to fill tommorrow. I may wind up getting overtime which, if I intend to see all these movies, is probably a really good thing.

Zonk.

Last night I had another one of my ten hour comas where I get really tired around 8:30, go to bed, and don't wake up until morning. It seems I need to do that about once a week and that recharges me. I hated going to bed so early because it was such a nice evening.

This is a short-yet-long week. My overnight man has to go out of town for a wedding this weekend so we traded shifts, he's doing my Friday and I'm doing his Saturday overnight. Which means I won't have to go to work on Friday, but will have to go in at midnight, then go and get our taxes done right when I get off on Saturday morning. Saturday will be a long day. I guess it' good if I stock up on sleep now.

I wanted to work more on my D&D module last night, but all I managed to do was read. I'm currently reading Phillip K. Keep It Clean* Dick's Valis and Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. And in case you are wondering if I just read what Lost tells me to read, the answer is yes. Yes I do. They're both thrilling books though, and funny.

*BACKSTORY Many years ago, some friends and I regularly used a chat room that had quite a thorough profanity filter and would give the message [Keep It Clean] whenever a dirty word was used. One night we started discussing the works of Phillip K. Dick, and well, you can guess what happen. I've been calling him Phillip K. Keep It Clean ever since even though nobody's around who gets the joke anymore.

Where is everybody? LJ's awfully quiet. Oh my... don't tell me that people are actually taking this whole "strike" nonsense seriously?  What a freaking joke. Man, if every person who secretly hates the customers they have to serve outed themselves the way the Sup guy did more than one of you righteuously indignant "strikers" would be out of a job and facing much bigger problems than what a blog owner in Russia thinks of you.

But that's okay baby. I'm here for you. I'm not jealous. You go and do whatever you need to do. We both know that sooner or later you won't be able to resist it and then you'll come crawling back for another taste of sweet, sweet candy. Bam. Oh yes, you'll be back soon enough, begging me to fuck your mindholes with my blogcock.

I have no idea what I'm talking about :) That's what I get for staying up until 12:30 playing World of Warcraft when I should have been in bed at ten. I'm glad it's the weekend.

So... to anyone who may be reading... how about last night's episode of Lost?
uberreiniger: (Crush German)
So apparently the latest justification people have for keeping their panties in a twist and going on LJ strike is that the Russian gangsters who own LJ said mean things about the whining LJ users in a badly-translated memo.

Sheesh. I don't care if they're a bunch of mean jerks who think their customers are idiots. MOST COMPANIES are mean jerks who think their customers are idiots. So the LJ owners see irate users as "the enemy." Guess what? The kid serving you at McDonald's sees you as "the enemy" too. So the LJ owners need a new PR department, I'll admit that. Otherwise, they view you no better or worse than any other entity you buy from every day.

Okay, I'm done with that. In happier news, we got Mel's car back and it runs better than ever. It turns out some idiot put the wrong kind of sparkplugs in it a long time ago and we've never known. Now with the right spark plugs and a new fue filter it runs great. And while it was still costly, it was far less so than it would have been at many other places. We are blessed to know a good and fair mechanic. Having it taken care of is a big load off our minds.

New LOST tonight, the last before the break brought on by the Writers' Strike. The promos have promised that in this episode "SOMEONE - WILL - DIE!" and I'm really hoping it won't be a character I really like. Sadly, that includes just about everyone so unless they just kill off Third Freighter Crewman on the Left I'm probably going to be pissed at the end of the episode. We'll see.

I'm still money stress guy for the time being, but there are a lot of things in life to be happy about. Health and good friends top the list, along with having things to look forward to. I'll be getting to do the RPG thing again this Saturday with the gang over at [livejournal.com profile] cherith's house and that will be nice. Although what I really want to do this weekend is get caught up on sleep. Doubt it will happen, though. Never does. There's just too many things I like doing that require being awake.

This week's LOST. )
uberreiniger: (dress code (mercstales))
Work has not let up for a moment this week. These last few days I have been as busy as I ever was at Void Circle Pharmacy. It's good exercise, but I don't deal well with interruptions and this week has just been one interruption after another.

The new uniforms are in. We switch to them on Monday. I don't even want to look at them.

In spite of everything I'm still getting writing done every day. Unfortunately I'm hating everything that I write. I don't know how to shut off my inner critic. But I have Lost to look forward to tonight so my creativity should get a nice boost. It usually does from watchng that.

If you're wondering why I keep titling posts in German it's part of my effort to improve my knowledge of the language. For one thing, I just want to speak it well and for another, it will be necessary for my university program. It's mostly for my own benefit and I hope it doesn't bother anyone.

Valentine's Day was wonderful. I surprised Mel with roses and we watched this week's Lost followed by the short anime horror film Kakurenbo: Hide and Seek. Even if you're not a fan of anime or horror I suggest you watch this film just for the breathtaking piece of art that it is. It's twenty-five minutes of animation that looks like it cost $25 million. Horror isn't really the right word for it: there's no gore at all. But it's still intense and disturbing.

I've got the news on in the background as I always do at work and they're talking about the Dekalb, Illinois college shooting. They just had a man on whom they identified as a "campus shooting expert." What does it say when campus shootings happen often enough for there to be "experts" on the phenomenon? What does it say about said "expert" when the best he can do is caustically blame video games?

Survey, in case you care. )

Man, the things I'd miss out on if it weren't for Lostpedia. I fail at Lost as well as life. Here's what I learned:

So... if I don't hear back from my overnight guy in the next few hours I'm going to be looking at ANOTHER twelve hour shift starting at 4 am. AND I'll be training a new guy, which makes a typical eight hour shift feel like sixteen. And I can't go to bed and get a decent amount of rest either. O season premier of Lost thou art a cruel mistress indeed.

I know a few of you are fans so I thought I'd post to share my thoughts on the Monster.

Spoilers. Do not read unless you have seen everything up to the Season 3 episode 'The Cost Of Living' )

Where is Mr. Eko when you need him?

Let's hope that Charlie doesn't read Yahoo.
uberreiniger: (rescue me (biohhazard_icons))
Everybody on LJ all caught the memo about the lady in Arkansas with sixteen kids who all have scary names like Josiah and Jedediah, right? 'Cause I'm not posting it. No, when I hear the inevitable sound of "Duelling Banjos" I am going to be ready to run.

To LOST fans: Is it just me or is the Dharma Initiave logo very reminiscent of Umbrella Corp's logo from Resident Evil? Maybe it's just the presence of Michelle Rodriguez.
