Beats Antique and Other Oddities

Last night I got to experience another treat in my ongoing binge of concerts. I don't know the proper genre classification for Beats Antique and am too lazy to look it up so I will just call them what I always have, which is "bellydance music." Led by the diminutive yet fearsome Zoe Jakes who is one of the most amazing bellydancers I've ever seen live, they put on a seriously mindbending show.
Getting to the show was an interesting experience. We had some car trouble, got lost in midtown trying to find a friend's apartment, but ultimately we got to Lawrence, Kansas in plenty of time for the concert. It was delayed in starting anyway. I don't think the first act took the stage until after 10:30. It was a nice night to be standing outside though.
Said first act was a one-man jazz/zydeco/swamp music act who calls himself "The Tailor." I've got to admit, he was pretty good. And for being one guy with a beat-up homemade electric banjo who was unable to move more than two feet from the computer rig that provided his backing tracks, he really got the crowd warmed up in a great way. The second band were a local act, I think, called Dumptruck Butterlips. Despite the silly name, they were damn good. The band consisted of one dirty hippie gentleman and three gorgeous women playing a washboard, an accordion, and a stand-up bass. And that little bass player was all over that thing, too! She rocked it. I guess you'd classify them as alt-country if you had to classify them at all, but very up-tempo. Two of the ladies put down their instruments and did some hoop dancing for one of the songs and that was pretty amazing too. There's a lot going on onstage when you watch them and I hope they stay together and get their music out to a wider audience.
Beats Antique themselves hit the stage around midnight and words do not do them justice. The two percussionists/multi-instrumentalists weave this amazing sonic environment that sucks you in and doesn't let go easily. Meanwhile, Miss Jakes alternated between amazing dance numbers, (my personal favorite was the one where she really let her tribal background takeover and took the stage as a horned pagan goddess,) and playing a marching band bass drum the way Jimi Hendrix played guitar. I'm not kidding. For over two hours the three of them just wove this amazing sonic tapestry that had the whole audience completely under its spell. And with all the bellydancers in the crowd it was an amazing sight to see.
Such sights come with a price. It was after 2 am by the time we left the concert hall. After taking our friend home and dealing finishing the car issues from earlier in the day it was almost 4 am by the time we got home. Did I mention I had to be at work by 7 am this morning? Yeah, today was a rough day at work during which no fucks were given. I got off work, treated myself to a hot fudge sundae from Sonic, got home, and passed right the fuck out. I did not dream, I was so tired. Was it worth it and would I do it again? Hell yeah. Next weekend I get back into the metal mindset with my Viking metal heroes Amon (fucking) Amarth(!) I don't know if they've ever seen Zoe in her antlered goddess costume, but I think they would approve.
