A very nice weekend began with a very tragic and bizarre start. Shortly after I woke up Saturday morning I got a call from my mother to say that the old woman who lived next door to them had fallen down her basement stairs and died. It was very somber news to hear, especially since she was someone I saw almost every day during the two years I lived with my parents. She was a sweet old woman and it was such a painful, lonely way to die.

Saturday we went to the Rennaisance Festival and had a very wonderful time. Met up with some friends and hung out with them, and caught a very enjoyable comedy show. Didn't get my traditional turkey leg though, for they are just too expensive now. After that we came home and watched The Devil's Backbone. In case anybody didn't know it, Guillermo Del Toro is one of the best and most important filmmakers working today.

Sunday we had Chinese for lunch and went and saw Choke, which turned out to be a really funny movie. There wasn't as much choking in it as the previews lead one to believe, but it does an excellent job point out the risks involved in using anal beads. And it makes you think twice about the sordid lives of historical reinactors.

So that was my weekend. Nothing important got done, just a nice couple of days out and some uncomfortable thoughts on death. Back to another day of work now.

Yeah, I think that's one reason why I don't get around to posting as much anymore. By the time something happens that I want to post about it, many things have happened and I feel bad lumping all the rather non-related feelings together in one entry. I guess it really doesn't matter at all. Maybe I'm just lazy about posting these days. *shrugs*

My symathies to your neighbor and her family, and may you have shouted many a "HuzzaH" at the fair.

That is so sad.

I've seen The Devil's Backbone years ago. I had no idea that was done by him. That was a REALLY scary movie. I almost peed myself.

I think it's sort of neat that in Devil's Backbone and in Pan's Labyrinth, (and his much earlier film Chronos, to a lesser degree,) the monsters are actually the least horrifying aspect of the story compared to the human antagonists.

That is pretty crazy actually. I do not remember much of the movie. I just remember being scared like wo!

When I first found out that Peter Jackson wasn't doing the Hobbit I was upset...but knowing that he will be doing it makes me feel better. Atleast I know someone good will be doing it.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother's neighbor, but still, I'm glad you had fun at the fair.

I should go to the movies.

I love The Devil's Backbone...I almost bought the VHS at the store for $2, but I figured it wouldn't be subtitled, so I decided to wait for DVD. LOL. He's a great director.

Apparently in addition to the Hobbit they're trying to get him to direct movie versions of Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Slaughterhouse Five, and a new version of Frankenstein. He'll never be out of a job and that's a good thing. He's made so few films that I want to see a lot more from him and quickly!

Meh...I like the Kenneth Braugnah Frankenstein, personally, a lot...I wish they wouldn't remake stuff so much. I hate remakes! Unless the original is crap, or you're adding something completely new to the plot, then they should leave it alone.

Well, I've never eaten a turkey leg or gone to the festival- Choke, anal beads and chinese food being used in the same paragraph is just - wrong.
As a funeral director- I can tell you that most people who are aged and fall do not linger as most of the time the fall is caused by some sort of other natural cause not related to actual falling (I would say in about 98% of the cases) and in the other 2% they still do not linger because they suffer from broken neck or closed head injury. Otherwise they usually can drag themselves back up the steps.
So... why do I sound like Temperance ... oh yeah.
I really am trying to make you feel better.
Really.
I'm glad you had a nice weekend despite of the whole death thing.
Oh I really need to stop talking.

I guess the crime scene people said she died almost instantly of her injuries, but it's still a horrific way to go. And I feel bad for her son who came over and found her body.

I'm sorry that was not very sympathetic of me. I am terribly sorry.

Don't worry, I didn't take it unsympathetically. You're fine.

my best friend told me I was heartless and overly clinical- of course she also told me I was heartless when I laughed through "Titanic" and she cried and that made me laugh more...I also spent the day picking up dog poop because my husband told me I wasn't meeting his needs and I asked him what those were and he said "to shovel the dog shit" so I did and he came home and told me I "take everything to literally"
Anyway, I feel really badly and sometimes I need people to tell me I'm going all Temperance and to have some humanity.
Well, you know I just adore you and I would never say anything to try to hurt you- at least I hope you know that.
I'm sorry.
J

So, did they renew the lease in Bonner Springs? I'd heard that last year was the last time they could use the location.

Yeah, they're renewed. Although this economy is hurting the Ren Fest apparently. One performer told us they'd seen a big drop in numbers this year, although you couldn't have told from the crowd.

Sorry to hear about your parents neighbours house. But at least they found her quickly.

And as the rest of weekend showed, life goes on which is what she'd wanted.

*hugs*

Oh wow, that's terrible. It's the kind of news nobody wants to hear.

Also, I need to watch that movie, because yeah, it's from Del Toro, and I vowed to watch more of his than just Pan's Labyrinth.

that's sad about the neighbor. At least she was still in comparatively good health til the last. there are worse ways to go.

Glad y'all had fun at the Ren Fest. I've never had a turkey leg, and I intend to keep it that way. I don't really know why they seem so very unappetizing to me. I do love the shows at the fests though. So much fun!
