Jimmy Carter went to Israel today and pretty much pissed everyone in both the United States and Israeli governments off by setting up a meeting with the leader of everyone's second favorite terrorist organization, Hamas. Apparently part of his objective is to obtain the release of three Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

Great. Because you know, Jimmy Carter is JUST the person who you want trying to release hostages. Because you know, he has such a GREAT history with that.

He has no leverage or currency with anybody. He's behaving foolishly, thinking that being an ex-president makes him somebody in their eyes. Sometimes I don't think he understands that he's the ex-president everybody hates.

Well, not EVERYBODY hates him - the man won the Nobel Peace prize, for crissake.

Frankly, this whole post and its comments are stuck in 1980. Carter's actually done a lot more since he left office than he ever managed to while he was President...

That may be, but unfortunately if he had not been president no one would know who he was and the associations with his presidency will continue to follow him wherever he goes. I'm not going to knock him if he brings something positive out of this situation, but considering how he's acting without the approval one side in the conflict, Israel, then the odds of his visit making a difference of any kind are slim and the odds of him unintentionally making the situation worse are increased.

I think he thinks his controversial book gave him some cred with Hamas. I think he suffers from too-damned-altruistic to do any damn good syndrome.

I think you're probably right.
