[profile] poorheather drew my attention to something tragically amusing. Remember that band Devo? "Whip It" yeah, those guys. Well apparently they gave their approval for Disney to go and put together a band of pre-teen kids to perform covers of old Devo songs. The resulting dumbing-down of pop culture is called Devo2.0 All I can say is, was this really necessary? I tend to be against the idea of "kid friendly" versions of pop songs to begin with, but to create a kid-friendly band dedicated to Devo, of all things? It just doesn't make any sense. Check out the videos section and see if you can figure out what line-dancing pandas wearing sombreros has to do with the song "Freedom of Choice" because I couldn't. Watching the kids perform is sad in its own way, because I seriously doubt those five children were in any way involved in the actual playing or recording of the music heard. Hanson had more musical integrity.

I feel particularly sorry for the lead singer. If she follows the pattern of other Disney kiddie alums such as Britney and Christina, then in eight years you can expect to see her on the covers of tabloids smoking and boozing it up and in videos on MTV, thrusting her thong at the camera while swapping spit with her lesbian girlfriend(s). I really hope that does not happen.

I think it's the pinnacle of annoyance I've felt at the recent trend of raping early 80's songs and using them to sell worthless garbage. Did you catch the Reese's commercial to the tune of "I Want Candy" by the Bow Wow Wow? Or perhaps you overhead Devo's previous sell-out using the song "Whip It" to hawk floor mops? And lately The Go-Go's "We Got The Beat" has been rewritten for Papa John's Pizza as "We Got The Meat." Guess the girls weren't so much against animal cruely as they said they were.

I thought advertising was supposed to be all youth-based and about catching that crucial 18-24 year old demographic. So what's with all selling stuff to the tune of thirty year-old music?

look at the stuff they are trying to sell with the music...a swiffer duster, cook your own pizza and..well..candy. The Bow Wow Wow song will be a hit in any generation, kind of like all the 60's songs we all know. People who buy papa johns pizzas are usually families because they are cheaper than delivery and better than frozen. College age kids don't usually have an oven to cook them in. And do you really think 18-24 year olds are buying the swiffer duster? These items are being marketed to our age group because we are going to use them, but they use catchy pop songs that many people have heard, so it catches younger people too. It's the best of both worlds!

Wow, Devo2.0 sounds worse than A*Teens. I didn't think that was possible.

ahhh my darling Ubey. Mark Mothersbaugh has already sold out to Disney. He scored the Rugrats years ago, and has done other children's television shows as well. is it sad? that not so much, but making a Devo 2.0? That is a highly depressing thought. *shakes head*

also, guess what I finally got off my ass and mailed? should be there tomorrow? Wednesday? ;)

Oh yeah, Mothersbaugh has been working in cartoons for years. I never had a problem with that. I have a problem with him allowing his good songs to be remade badly.

Oh man. That is pretty bad. I'd heard something about this but so little that I took it seriously enough to think that it might actually be real. Should've known better.

And that "I want candy" think reminds me of M.C. PeePants on Aqua Teen Hunger Force with the crazy spider with the diaper and shower cap.
