One Mel-less day out of the way, eight more to go. Yeah, I can do this! Things went off without a hitch this morning in terms of getting her onto her flight and back home to Allerbammer. Then I came home and enrolled in my benefits plan for another year. Life is serene, but everyone and their foolish little causes seems determined to damage my calm. I'm sick of Republicans and Democrats, but they get off easy this time as I'm no more sick of them than usual. I'm sick of religious fudamentalists trying to force their beliefs on other people and I'm sick of atheists trying to take away Christmas. I'm sick of people getting angry over Intelligent Design - an idea, which if taught in a classroom, broadens one's perspective and doesn't hurt anybody. And I'm sick of people getting angry over Evolution - an idea which, when taught in a classroom, likewise broadens one's perspective and doesn't hurt anybody. Shut the hell up, all of you.
I'm cranky, I guess. People need to learn to chill out and not be cranky. That way I will not be cranky. You're all lucky I will be in a tryptophan-laced coma come Thursday night.

Date: 2005-11-22 10:54 pm (UTC)1) Intelligent Design is not science. I mean that in the most literal of senses: the scientific method literally cannot be applied to ID because ID provides no testable hypothesis. Whether or not you choose to believe that there was Someone guiding the development of life on this planet, there is no debate - even amongst IDers, at least on the surface - of the mechanisms involved in that development. Those mechanisms are described in the theory of evolution. Therefore, this is quite literally a nonissue - ID and evolution should have nothing to do with one another.
2) The Messiah, if Yeshua of Nazareth was indeed him, was almost certainly born either in late April or early May. (Even on the Mediterrean coast, shepherds don't typically stay out overnight with their sheep in the middle of the winter. It's unpleasant.) The religious holiday in question is Christian only by virtue of adaptation on the part of Christianity - the holiday's most direct ancestor is the Roman festival of Saturnalia, but winter solstice festivals are literally worldwide. (I think the Arabs don't have one because they're basically desert-locked, but Islam's the only major religion I can think of that lacks such.) Besides, as Bertrand Russell would be all too quick to tell you, you need not be religious at all to appreciate an annual celebration of fellow-feeling, charity and gift-giving.

Date: 2005-11-23 01:27 am (UTC)I know all about Saturnalia and arbitrary date-fixing, etc. But this is when we celebrate it so let's enjoy it for what it is. I'm a pluralist. I don't think anybody should be afraid to call their winter solstice celebration of choice by name in public. The campaign of intimidation currently in existence based upon extreme misinterpration of the 2nd Ammendment is a threat to all religious traditions. I'll speak most loudly for my own because it's mine and it's what I know best, but no one of any faith should have to put up with it anymore than they should have to put up with oppression from another religion.

Date: 2005-11-23 03:03 am (UTC)On the one hand, I agree with you here. On the other, I find myself wondering, if it's not scientificially provable and we're about to say it's not scientifically provable, why are we bringing it up in science class? Doesn't that seem strange?
The campaign of intimidation currently in existence based upon extreme misinterpration of the 2nd Ammendment is a threat to all religious traditions.
It's called the Establishment Clause, and it's in the First Amendment. The Second Amendment is about carrying guns. I don't think you meant the Second Amendment... and if you did, I'm very, very scared. ;)
Seriously, though, what campaign of intimidation are you talking about? Is there a recent news story I've missed that you're referring to? (Honest question, no snark)

Date: 2005-11-23 05:25 am (UTC)Cause lets face it. The people who want Intelligent Design taught in the classroom don't want just any intelligent design taught, or every Intelligent Design theory taught; they want their ID theory taught.
They would get just as pissed if we started teaching the Hawaiian story of how Maui, who lived with the race that came before the human race in underground caverns, once found a crack leading to the surface, and it being just the right size, made love to it. One of the gods wandering on the surface saw Maui's penis sticking out of the ground and she sat on it, impregnating her and giving birth to the human race.
Evolution is a SCIENTIFIC theory. Leave that in the science classroom. Yes it's a theory. Say it's a theory.
And teach the Bible in the appropriate classroom. GASP! What??? Teach the bible? In public schools? Yes. I read the bible in high school, In ENGLISH CLASS. It's a book. We read it during our mythology semester. Along with Greek mythology. I wouldn't have minded some other religions as well. I think a whole class dedicated to the study of religions (PLURAL) would be a good idea.
But what do I know? I also think we should make high school kids vote, and follow politics in their Social Studies classes every year. Then maybe Politicians would pay a little more attention to long term effects of their decisions rather than pandering to people who are going to die in 5-7 years. And maybe kids would get used to the idea of voting and being politically aware when they become adults. Then maybe they would stop voting in the idiots who remove creationism from the classroom.

Date: 2005-11-26 01:45 am (UTC)as for religious studies, i think if people understood more about their fellow man, then maybe, just maybe we could be a bit more tolerant of one another and i wouldn't have to see anymore asinine anti islamic bumper stickers on the backs of trucks *rolls eyes*
