One Mel-less day out of the way, eight more to go. Yeah, I can do this! Things went off without a hitch this morning in terms of getting her onto her flight and back home to Allerbammer. Then I came home and enrolled in my benefits plan for another year. Life is serene, but everyone and their foolish little causes seems determined to damage my calm. I'm sick of Republicans and Democrats, but they get off easy this time as I'm no more sick of them than usual. I'm sick of religious fudamentalists trying to force their beliefs on other people and I'm sick of atheists trying to take away Christmas. I'm sick of people getting angry over Intelligent Design - an idea, which if taught in a classroom, broadens one's perspective and doesn't hurt anybody. And I'm sick of people getting angry over Evolution - an idea which, when taught in a classroom, likewise broadens one's perspective and doesn't hurt anybody. Shut the hell up, all of you.

I'm cranky, I guess. People need to learn to chill out and not be cranky. That way I will not be cranky. You're all lucky I will be in a tryptophan-laced coma come Thursday night.

I was cranky yesterday...but I think I feel pretty good today. It's amazing what some sort of illness followed by feeling good can do for the soul. I have been dizzy for 5 days, on and off...and today I woke up and it seems to be gone. My blood pressure is back to normal...I might make it!
So, get yourself in the mindset to be thankful for what you have...a wonderful girlfriend, good friends and life. And let the crazy people drive someone else into a bad mood :) *HUG*

My cold I had a few weeks ago left me dizzy and disoriented for several days before and after. Must be the latest mutation of the virus!

I am very thankful for all I have. My life is amazing compared to so many other peoples' and it's important to keep that in perspective.

Oooooohhh!! Evolution makes me so crazy angry! It gets in my coffee and sprouts new life! Little civilizations floting like so much flotsum attacking the libertine jetsum and their wicked godless ways! But since the jetsum are inf facy godless, they are the ones who invent the laser beam first, and obliterate the sanctimonious flotsum! All hail Slobbocus! Emperor of Jetsumonicus!

Or that may be just undissolved powdered creamer.

I don't see anything wrong with stores changing to "Happy Holidays" in favor of "Merry Christmas." You know, goodness forbid we acknowledge that there are more religions in the world than just Christianity. I'm not for taking away everything Christian, just for the inclusion of everything else.

Date: 2005-11-22 10:07 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rustie25.livejournal.com
I agree on inclusion, but arn't people actually buying gifts for the Christmas holiday? Then again I have a problem with people celebrating a christian holiday if they arnt christian. I mean, I dont go around celebrating Hanakuh because I am not jewish. But Christmas has become so secular...I don't know. I just have a problem with the materialism and secularness of a holiday that is based on the birth of one religions Messiah. But then again...there was the whole thing about that santa guy brining people gifts...ack!
I dont know...I am so warped by PC that I don't know what to think anymore!

From: [identity profile] blkhmster.livejournal.com
well i'm atheist and i celebrate the holiday. not because i adhere to your doctrine, but because christmas to me means time with my family, giving to others and good food. just because i attach a different meaning to it,doesn't mean i shouldn't be allowed to celebrate with my theist family members does it? so to make people with your mindset happy, i'll just tell my mom this year "sorry mom, i don't believe in god, so you and dad can't come out here and see your grandkids for christmas, because i'm not allowed to share your holiday with you"..how silly and i honestly don't think jesus would approve of that type of behavior or way of thinking. i was raised christian, so i do have an inkling of what jesus taught.

That's exactly what I'm in favor of. No religion should have to live in fear of secular humanist retaliation. Everyone ought to be able to speak the name of their holiday boldly and loudly and not be forced to hide behind some generic whitewash.

i think it's funny that for a group of people, whose messiah taught tolerance and acceptance of others, they sure have a problem in general with including everyone. I love my christian friends and families, but i get sick and tired of fundie xians acting like a persecuted minority when in fact they're not.

A couple of thoughts (which may provoke crankiness - if so I apologize in advance):

1) Intelligent Design is not science. I mean that in the most literal of senses: the scientific method literally cannot be applied to ID because ID provides no testable hypothesis. Whether or not you choose to believe that there was Someone guiding the development of life on this planet, there is no debate - even amongst IDers, at least on the surface - of the mechanisms involved in that development. Those mechanisms are described in the theory of evolution. Therefore, this is quite literally a nonissue - ID and evolution should have nothing to do with one another.

2) The Messiah, if Yeshua of Nazareth was indeed him, was almost certainly born either in late April or early May. (Even on the Mediterrean coast, shepherds don't typically stay out overnight with their sheep in the middle of the winter. It's unpleasant.) The religious holiday in question is Christian only by virtue of adaptation on the part of Christianity - the holiday's most direct ancestor is the Roman festival of Saturnalia, but winter solstice festivals are literally worldwide. (I think the Arabs don't have one because they're basically desert-locked, but Islam's the only major religion I can think of that lacks such.) Besides, as Bertrand Russell would be all too quick to tell you, you need not be religious at all to appreciate an annual celebration of fellow-feeling, charity and gift-giving.

I know you can't scientifically prove ID in the divine sense. That's not even an issue. Hell, the fact it can't be scientifically proven needs to be reiterrated every other sentence when discussing it. I, however, seem to be the only person who feels it deserves a mention who has no problem with that. And when I say a mention, I mean just that. What ID supporters want is it to take up days and days of class time. I say make everybody happy this way: say "Some people believe the universe was created in a deliberate act. This is not impossible but is scientifically unproveable." That doesn't hurt anybody and evolution doesn't hurt anybody. If your faith in either one is strong, then hearing something that completely opposes you shouldn't hurt you. Be offended by it all you want, but if you think it's actually going to hurt what you place faith in, then you've got bigger problems then the arguement at hand.

I know all about Saturnalia and arbitrary date-fixing, etc. But this is when we celebrate it so let's enjoy it for what it is. I'm a pluralist. I don't think anybody should be afraid to call their winter solstice celebration of choice by name in public. The campaign of intimidation currently in existence based upon extreme misinterpration of the 2nd Ammendment is a threat to all religious traditions. I'll speak most loudly for my own because it's mine and it's what I know best, but no one of any faith should have to put up with it anymore than they should have to put up with oppression from another religion.

On the one hand, I agree with you here. On the other, I find myself wondering, if it's not scientificially provable and we're about to say it's not scientifically provable, why are we bringing it up in science class? Doesn't that seem strange?

The campaign of intimidation currently in existence based upon extreme misinterpration of the 2nd Ammendment is a threat to all religious traditions.

It's called the Establishment Clause, and it's in the First Amendment. The Second Amendment is about carrying guns. I don't think you meant the Second Amendment... and if you did, I'm very, very scared. ;)

Seriously, though, what campaign of intimidation are you talking about? Is there a recent news story I've missed that you're referring to? (Honest question, no snark)

Ok, so if i was a pain in the butt (shut up *LOL*) and you walked up to me and said "Merry Christmas" and I said (remember i'm a pain in the butt) "Thank you,but I'm atheist/jewish/pagan/a dirty cartoon" etc...would you then correct yourself and say "Merry Solstice/Happy Hanukah/Happy Yule/ happy dirty cartoon sex"? :) ... it's just easier for me and makes more sense to just include everyone from the git go and say Happy Holidays. If anyone is truly offended by me not stating their holiday of choice by name, then i can honestly say "well i'm sorry, i think it's rude to assume, so i hope you'll take my good tidings for what they are"...or i could just say "i hope someone shoves a candy cane up your ass, get over yourself"...i think i'll go with the former, although i'd pay good money to see someone shove a candy cane up someone else's ass..that's just good times right there :P

Evolution vs. The Bible.
Cause lets face it. The people who want Intelligent Design taught in the classroom don't want just any intelligent design taught, or every Intelligent Design theory taught; they want their ID theory taught.
They would get just as pissed if we started teaching the Hawaiian story of how Maui, who lived with the race that came before the human race in underground caverns, once found a crack leading to the surface, and it being just the right size, made love to it. One of the gods wandering on the surface saw Maui's penis sticking out of the ground and she sat on it, impregnating her and giving birth to the human race.

Evolution is a SCIENTIFIC theory. Leave that in the science classroom. Yes it's a theory. Say it's a theory.

And teach the Bible in the appropriate classroom. GASP! What??? Teach the bible? In public schools? Yes. I read the bible in high school, In ENGLISH CLASS. It's a book. We read it during our mythology semester. Along with Greek mythology. I wouldn't have minded some other religions as well. I think a whole class dedicated to the study of religions (PLURAL) would be a good idea.

But what do I know? I also think we should make high school kids vote, and follow politics in their Social Studies classes every year. Then maybe Politicians would pay a little more attention to long term effects of their decisions rather than pandering to people who are going to die in 5-7 years. And maybe kids would get used to the idea of voting and being politically aware when they become adults. Then maybe they would stop voting in the idiots who remove creationism from the classroom.

i think there should be a religious studies in public schools as well. I think it should be required. not to promote religion but so people can learn more and better understand the different religions. then maybe someone would actually learn what atheism is actually about and quit being total turds towards me when i say i'm atheist. just because i'm atheist, doesn't mean i'm an asshole. as for high school kids voting..uh NO...my dad teaches history at the high school and all those twerps, with the exception of few, just spout what mommy and daddy say at home. of course, the other side of that is that sadly that's what most adults do. i really with people would make informed decisions when they vote. do a little research, study the candidates. i'm not saying vote for my candidate, but at least know why you voted for the one you did.

I like your idea about religious studies. I absolutely advocate the same thing. I like his idea about students at high school level taking a more active role in political process. How are they ever going to learn not to think what their parents tell them if someone doesn't show them how to make their own decisions?

Date: 2005-11-26 01:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] blkhmster.livejournal.com
don't know, but when my dad tries to teach them to be objective and think for themselves, they tell mommy and daddy and then mommy and daddy go to the principal and head of the school board and try to get my dad fired...so excuse me if i'm just a little bitter about the whole idea..it happens about four or five times a year...

as for religious studies, i think if people understood more about their fellow man, then maybe, just maybe we could be a bit more tolerant of one another and i wouldn't have to see anymore asinine anti islamic bumper stickers on the backs of trucks *rolls eyes*

yeah gotta open my atheist mouth here *LOL*.... Happy Holidays is to include. Atheists aren't taken Christmas away from anyone. Christians on the other hand took Yule from the Pagans and made it their own (as they did Spring Soltice [easter] and Samhain [halloween] as well). call it what you want, nobody's gonna tackle your ass in the mall, straddle you and scream "say Happy Holiday bitch..say it!!!" *lmao* ...make it what you want :) ...but yeah i agree with the rest of the stuff...i'm tired of fundies and politicians too :)
