On Corsetry...

Last week's issue had a cover story that's been swimming around in my mind. The secretive subculture of... corsetry! The article was about a local lady who makes corsets and sells them on the internet, with commentary from several of her satisfied customers. Now I find the look of a woman in a corset very sexy, but am well aware that they are very painful and would not fault any woman for not wanting to wear one. So naturally, I was intrigued by this world of women who seem to wear them for pleasure.
And wear them for pleasure they do! I was amused that throughout the four-page article, the interviewees kept going out of their way to reiterate that wearing a corset is not a fetish and it's not a sexual thing. Yet throughout, the corset-making lady keeps talking about her quest to have a fourteen inch waist and how her husband helps her achieve this goal by "forcing" her to wear a corset twenty-two hours a day. "I love the way he disciplines my body," she purrs. "I love the way he forces me to shape my body," she intones. Sure sounds sexual to me.
And bear in mind, that for the humble price of $5000 she will happily fashion for you a black leather S&M contraption called The Sarcophagus - A corset that encases you from neck to ankles. She's making one for an Italian couple right now.
To each their own. There's a saying I like: "when you do it, it's kinky. When someone else does it, it's perverted." Apply that as you like. Just don't brag to the world of your sexual fetish while trying to not make it sound like a sexual fetish at the same time.
