Making the rounds right now is Neil Gaiman's bittersweet story of a brave cat, and one man's attempt to make an animated film of said story. It's awesome, beautiful, and runs the risk of making you cry.
As a study in contrast, I think people should also be aware of what might be the best The Oatmeal comic strip yet. It's no less bittersweet and still something of a tearjerker, but is leavened by The Oatmeal's unique zany humor. And this story is all true. Including the Republic of Cat. Especially that part.
All of this feline heroism is really making me want to reread Tad Williams' Tailchaser's Song. If you haven't read it, it's a high fantasy adventure starring ordinary house cats. Think Watership Down only with cats, and better because cats are awesome and unlike rabbits do not require a mythological justification to elevate their status as nature's butt monkey. There's also this series called Warrior Cats which I keep hearing about but don't know if it's actually any good.
Our giant cat Zephyr keeps ramming into my leg as I write this to remind me that it's near his supper time. This is as it should be.
