Gary Gygax, creator of Dungeons & Dragons, dies at 69.
Yet another person who's work shaped me in my formative years and made me who I am. I feel like I've lost a very old friend.

Curse of the LOLcat

stitchedsutures snapped a photograph in a museum of a mummified cat from ancient Egypt. At my request she turned it into this totally awesome ( undead cat macro.. )
Thanks Amanda. You rock socks. Or in this case, funerary wrappings.

Death is only the beginning
Aug. 3rd, 2007 02:16 amMy condolences to the two people on my friends list who both lost loved ones in the last twenty-four hours. I am glad that those who passed had the time and the ability to come to peace with what was about to happen. Many do not. The hard part is for the people who must carry on here without them. You are not forgotten and neither are they.
Today was the last of my days off. No more time off in sight until the thirteenth of August. We had lunch at our favorite Mediterranean cafe and then went and bought the digital recorder Mel has had her eye on. Will there be voice posts uploaded in the near future? All I can say is it is now within the realm of possibility where it was not before.
After a night at Dean & Lesley's (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a truly great bad movie,) we are back home and readying ourselves for the ordeal ahead. Bless you all.

Kurt Vonnegut 1922 - 2007
Apr. 11th, 2007 11:49 pm
"We probably could have saved ourselves, but we were too damned lazy to try very hard ... and too damn cheap," - Kurt Vonnegut
I can't believe he's gone. Vonnegut was a novelist whose writing changed my life. That's cliche to say and most people who say it don't mean it, but when I read Cat's Cradle at the impressionable age of 14 it made me look at the world and the things we take for granted in a completely different way. And after looking at it that way once, I couldn't stop looking at it.
What's eerie is that for the last several days I've had snippets of dialogue from his novel Galapagos flashing through my mind pretty consistently. Galapagos dwells very heavily upon the subject of death, to the point of marking the names of characters with an asterisk whenever they are about to die. Perhaps I was tuned into something. Vonnegut himself was now marked with the asterisk.
Goodbye old friend.

Jul. 24th, 2006 10:44 amAcclaimed actor Mako dead at age 72.
The article lists many great films in which this fine actor played a role... and I have seen many of them. But I think to my generation he will forever be remembered for the role of The Wizard in the films Conan The Barbarian and Conan The Destroyer, and also, more recently for his delightful performance as the voice of Aku on the animated series Samurai Jack.
Farewell Mako. You will be missed and there'll never be another like you.

Season of the scythe
Mar. 2nd, 2006 04:58 amSometimes I really think Death must have a quota like ticket-writing cops do, and when it gets behind it has to rush to catch up. Four people on my friends list have experienced the unexpected deaths of loved ones in the last two weeks. I don't want to name names, but you all know who you are and I want you to know my prayers go out to you. Others I know continue to struggle with the aftermath of such events and my heart goes out to you as well.
Be thankful for what you have, everyone.

A sad day indeed

Don Knotts and Darrin McGavin
I only knew McGavin from Night Stalker reruns, his inspired, memorable guest appearances on The X-Files, and of course for A Christmas Story. But those roles were enough to encapsulate and sum up his vast brilliance.
Don Knotts... Well, we all knew Don Knotts and I think I took it for granted he would live forever. The man could just radiate goodness and a love for acting in everything he did, and he continued to work until very late in life. I think the world was better off for it.
Goodbye to two of the most amazing comic actors of their generation.

R.I.P. Pat Morita
1932-2005
I was all set to write a post about how great it was to be caught up on bills and to even have a little (not a lot,) of money left over, but then I found out the great Mr. Miyagi had passed away. We salute you, Pat. You were an inspiration to a generation and a fine example of a life lived with no regrets. See you on the other side.
Here's the obituary from Yahoo: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051125/ap_on_en_mo/obit_morita

Today we lost a man who was a hero and inspiration to me, yet so much more of one to so many people who survived that time. When you stop and think how many Nazis would have gotten away with it and just slipped away back into their carefree lives if he hadn't taken it upon himself to see that they didn't, it's really quite astounding. One person can make a difference, it's a cliche, but it's true.

Aug. 29th, 2005 09:37 pmR.I.P. Denis D'Amour, 1960-2005
Friday night one of my favorite musicians of all time, Denis D'Amour, guitarist for the Canadian metal band Voivod passed away due to advanced colon cancer. Hardly anyone who reads my journal knows who Voivod are and the ones that do don't like them, but this was a band that literally turned my life around when I got into them at the age of 13. Although they never had a large following, they were a band that other bands listened to and echos of their sound are everywhere in the music of today's most popular heavy bands. I had the pleasure to meet D'amour in '96 and he was the most amazing person. He will be deeply missed, at least I will miss him.
