I can't understand why so many musicians do drugs when music itself is such a powerful high on its own. It's an answer I'm scared to ever find out. Maybe once you're that high on something it's hard to resist the temptation to double the feeling or triple it?

I don't know how I ever got along all these years not being a musician. It was always there, calling me. I would have dreams about guitars, really powerful dreams of longing. I developed a habit of rubbing the fingers on my left hand to keep the calluses on them even if I never played. Yet I still went on, selling guitars and eventually my amplifiers, telling myself that being a musician was a childish dream and that I needed to leave it behind.

I made such a terrible mistake and it's one I'm still paying for.

I am so glad, so grateful to be in a band now. I can't express my gratitude enough. I feel so connected to music now. I suppose you could say I feel complete. I could gush about it forever but I'd just be talking in circles. I will say that our band leader has a very ambitious project for Halloween. There is a band called Iced Earth who some years ago put out an album of songs about classic monster movie villains. She has decided that we should put on a concert of cover songs from this album. Here is the first one we're working on. I just mastered the bass part tonight. It's about the Antichrist as depicted in the Omen films in case you can't tell.

This project is giving me a whole new appreciation for Iced Earth's music. I've always respected them but never really been a fan. I've been much more into Jon Schaffer's other band Demons & Wizards. But yeah, definitely digging IE now as I never have before. Such amazing musicians.

Speaking of bands who write songs about the Antichrist, I did something very ambitious a few days ago and created a TV Tropes page for my favorite band, Saviour Machine. Hey, they didn't have one and I felt it was high time they had one. Don't judge me. It is my first attempt at making a TV Tropes page and making it was fun. I spend way too much time on that damn website.

Early shift tomorrow and I'm still up. Going to regret this.

I know that Robert Smith (of The Cure fame) used to drink a bottle of vodka before going onstage. He believed the crowd loved everyone in the band except him. (Talk about low self-esteem!)

It must be scary to go onstage before 30,000-50,000 people, (even if you know they love you.) Then there's the link between creative genius and mental illness. For example: Mozart was a drug and alcohol addict and a sex addict. When he wasn't composing he was chasing his addictions.

Here's one you may enjoy:

"It used to be 'Hmm. I need to loosen up before I go on stage. Better drink ten white russians.' Nowadays it's like 'Hmm. I need to loosen up before I go on stage. Better do some tai chi.'" - Iggy Pop

I guess some musicians get used to it - and Iggy is getting up there in years. (Great quote BTW.)

Love Iced Earth. If you get around to some Dracula or The Phantom Opera Ghost (I think that's what it's called), would you post them here? I'd love to see :)

(Can't get the video above working at the moment, will try again in a bit).
