The three day no sales tax sale is over and I finally got a day off. Probably did too much WoW today but I don't care. I needed to blow off some steam and get some new imaginary weapons and armor. The weekend sale wasn't as bad as I feared it would be. In long stretches it was downright boring. My job is either aggravating or boring. There are no other feelings it produces and that's not good.

In other news, thanks to some awesome help from [livejournal.com profile] ravenbrenna M. and I got to watch Game of Thrones finally and I must say... OMG that show is amazing. I didn't think I could be impressed having read the book and knowing what happens but I was. Such a well-made show. It kept seeming like they were going to leave important or just plain cool details out but then at the last moment they'd deliver it and it was that much cooler for the way they did it. There was only one thing they left out of the book that bothered me and that's them leaving out the way Jon Snow had to basically arrange for Sam Tarly to pass training and be accepted as a member of the Night Watch. It was such a cool scene in the book, especially with how happy it made Sam. It's not really vital to the story and I can see why they skipped it. But it was kind of odd that one minute they're moaning about how bad Sam is and he can't do anything right and the next he's just graduating along with everyone else, no questions asked.

Also, they seem to have created the character of a prostitute who is nowhere in the book for the sole purpose of the evil male characters having someone to speak their evil plans to. Aside from furthering the unfortunate stereotype that only violent, murderous people pay for sex, however, it actually works okay. Ros comes off as an actual character with her own plans and opinions and not just a sounding board for whatever bad guy is monologueing at the time. Seriously though, if anybody remembers her from the book please tell me.

The bad part of working so much this weekend is that it's left me no time to work on writing bass lines for the original material I'm supposed to be working on for the band. I'm afraid this week's rehearsal might not be as productive as we want. I hope it doesn't set us back too far since the girls are chomping at the bit to start booking gigs. And I admit, I'm excited by the prospect too.

That's the brief rundown of the last few days. Trying not to be as sluggish about updating but we all know how that goes.

Which prostitute character? The only one I can think of is Tyrion's Shae...

I'm pretty sure what they did was take several different prostitute characters mentioned in passing in the book and molded them together into one.

You're talking about Rose? I think she did show up in the books, but very briefly...

ah, wait, the name is Ros, now that I googled it up. and it seems she does make an appearance in book 1 (but very very briefly, mentioned as the "red headed whore")

I'm thinking they're also setting her up on the show to be a prostitute who makes an appearance near the end of book 2.

My friend Cat gave me some disks with Game of Thrones on 'em and I have to agree with you. WOW! I am really enjoying the series. I'm over halfway through it (where the old king dies and the blondies-from-hell take over?) and I'm so hooked!

FANSQUEE ALL THE WAY!

The blondies from hell is a good descriptor!

So awesome to see you GoTing it up.

I think my only quibble with the show is that Cersei is not a feral bitch. Lena Headey is not the Cersei I imagined at all. Which sucks, because she's one of my favorite characters. Nearly every pivotal scene involving her was a huge disappointment for me. :(

Really? You don't think so? I admit I was skeptical when Lena Hedey was cast in the role but she plays a recognizable Cersei to me.

She really bothers me, the way she cocks her head with a very calm and calculating manner in virtually every scene she appears in. As I remember Cersei, she was very firey and did very little calculating at all. Just a blundering, raging woman as hate-able as Joffrey. I recall hearing Lena Headey state that she did not read the source material or do any sort of research on her character. For me, it sticks out in comparison to Emilia Clarke's Danaerys (which she picked the book apart to prepare for), and I could not ask for a better Danaerys.

Of course, there's always the possibility that the Cersei in aGoT is very different from the Cersei in recent books that I'm more familiar with. It's a minor complaint among minor complaints. Overall, they've done a fantastic job with the show. Even if I hate Lena's Cersei, there's always Danaerys, and Sansa, and Drogo, and Robb, among others who fit the characters I imagined to a T.

It's true that Cersei has the least foresight of the Lannisters but I never saw her as blinded by rage. As for Lena Heday, some actors choose not to read source material as an acting technique because they don't want it to influence their performance unduly, whereas some actors choose to to make it as true to the source as possible. Both are perfectly valid ways of going about it. I don't think Lena Heday is necessarily lazy because of it. Unless she truly just didn't care. Plus, keep in mind too that she just came off of Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles where nobody paid attention to the source material. BURN! :D

The casting is really phenomenal. Everyone does look exactly as I envisioned them. Except for Jorah Mormont, who I pictured as more of a Michael Wincott-type person. But Iain Glenn has totally won me over. I can't picture Jorah any other way now.

:D! Glad you like it!
And n'awwww John Snow! I was wondering myself how Sam passed but then I saw that they gave him crappy work and figured they kept him because they needed SOMEONE to do it. lol

That's pretty much exactly how it happens except in the book we get to see Jon convincing the higher-ups why Sam would be PERFECT to do those jobs. A minor thing to leave out for sure, but it was just so cool in the book.
