Day 30 - A book that disappointed you.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. Because it is an AWESOME book with maybe the most anti-climactic climax ever laid to paper. Dracula has not taken part in such a lackluster ending since, well... since Dracula.

Heh. By the time I got to the ending, I was so 'meh' about the book that I was perfectly happy just to see it end. The timing and pacing in that one just didn't do it for me. I kept thinking, "What kind of person is going 'ZOMG YOUR LIFE IS IN DANGER!' and then thinking 'And the best thing I can do about it is make you spend several months listening to a fragment of my life story which will make no sense to you.'?

Well, he did leave on the sensible assumption that him going right to Dracula would keep Dracula's attention off his daughter. But he could have probably saved everyone a great deal of trouble by starting his letter with "Off to fight Dracula. In case you're interested, here's the story of how I know him..."

AMEN. It might not be the most disappointing book I've EVER read, but it's pretty high on the list. Although I do give it some props for being well written enough that I actually finished it. Typically, I loathe epistolary novels and can't finish them.

I think epistolary works best in the suspense/horror genre and that's why the book worked. But all those suspenseful journal entries were writing checks the ending could not cash.
