A talk with [livejournal.com profile] dungeonwriter  last night got me remembering my abiding love and appreciation of Savatage - one of the greatest metal bands of their generation. What's that? Never heard of them, you say? Sure you have. Nowadays they just go by the name of Trans Siberian Orchestra. And while they deserve all the success and fame that TSO has brought them it will always be their original incarnation as a five piece hard rock band from Florida that I will be cheering for. Here's some videos from their heyday.

"Gutter Ballet" with original lead vocalist Jon Oliva and embedding disabled.

And "Edge of Thorns" with later vocalist Zak Stevens. This one I can embed.

Nice! Makes me think of Queensryche with a bit more of an edge.

And unlike Queensryche they never lost their edge :)

(Sorry. The 'ryche are a sore subject for me.)

Hey, while I still enjoy them, I can freely admit that they aren't what they used to be ;)

I think there's a reason why when they go on tour they don't play any songs newer than Empire. They know they fucked up.

And they keep making one lackluster album after another so I don't know what the hell's going on.

Wait...what? I NEVER seem to know when bands mutate into other bands, but I had no idea Savatage was TSO.

If it makes you feel any better, I also did not know this.

Yep. That whole Carol of the Bells song that they're famous for? Originally released on a Savatage album then re-released on the first TSO album.

Yep. Of course TSO has like, fifteen full-time members or thereabouts but all the Savatage people are still involved on some level.

I once covered that with my band...we nicknamed it "camel ride" because our guitarist would always fall into some bumpy rhythm ;-)

I totally love that song...and SAVA anyway.
Such a shame they only do Trans Siberian Orchestra now, but Jon Oliva's Pain is pretty good, too. And live, they doSava covers most of the time anyway.

I think they've only begun it recently. My friend in Florida saw them last year I think and they played "Hall of the Mountain King" and I think "Gutter Ballet" as well but they didn't play any Sava the two years I saw them in a row before that.

I would love to hear you singing Edge of Thorns. I bet you were amazing!
