I was hoping it was a hoax but it looks as if Peter Steele, lead singer of Type O Negative has passed away from the cardiac issues he's dealt with for several years.

Peter Steele 1962-2010

This totally ruins my day. I was just thinking two days ago that it seemed like time for a new album from them. Just yesterday I was having a private laugh at a funny quote I remembered Mr. Steele making many years ago. They were one of my favorite bands and he was one of my favorite singers. I got to see them live on two occasions and I'm grateful for that. But I still can't believe it's over.

That is very sad, and a terrible loss to the music world.

It's a tough pill to swallow. He was an artist with integrity - a rare thing in the music world at the best of times but especially in this day and age.

I am so depressed right now I just want to go home and cry.

Like I told Elizabeth, it feels like I've lost a family member who was always there for me and never got to say goodbye. His music has helped me through so much over the years it's not even funny.

I feel the same way. Type O Negative was such a huge musical influence through high school and college for me. We will never forget you, Peter.

Incredibly sad news. I saw him live in 2003 when he'd very recently had stomach surgery, and the performance he gave was absolutely heroic. He seemed absolutely indomitable. Such a tremendous loss to the Metal world that he's gone.

As Mikael Akerfeldt said in his blog, the music Peter and Type O created will echo in eternity.

When I saw him two years ago he didn't look well and left a lot of singing to the guitarist. But he still got out there and gave all those ten minute songs as much as he could give. He was a true performer and true champion of metal. Type O was such a mainstay of the metal world that I think we came to think they'd always be there and now they're not and it's just so strange.

This time, unfortunately, it's true.
That's one bad loss for the Goth music scene...his voice and style were unique.
I never got araiund to see them live on stage

I saw them live about two years ago now. Even then he didn't look well. He looked rather weak and tired, like he'd just gotten over being sick. And he left a lot of the singing to Joey the guitarist. He still put on an amazing show though. It's hard to believe I'll never get another chance to see him.

Definitely sad. The last time I saw them, for the Dead Again tour, he wasn't looking great at all. I mean, I saw this coming, I think we all did... but it's still always a shame when the time finally comes. I am very sad that there will be no more albums quite like those Type O Negatives ones that I have so enjoyed for so many years.

P.S. Since I stopped paying for all my extra icons or checking in regularly, I didn't realize until now that I have a serious shortage of "appropriate" icons for anything besides posting about my pets, the weather or a heavy metal concert. :/

Honestly I didn't see it coming. He did look bad on that tour, but I knew he'd just come out of being treated for his heart problems so I figured he was still recuperating. As tired as he looked it certainly wasn't enough to make me think that two years later he would be gone.

I've got a shortage of icons too now. It really irritates me.
