I now own a book that doesn't exist.

My father works for a rental car agency and occasionally he comes across interesting items left in the cars upon return. When nobody shows up to claim them he brings them to me. Yesterday he gave me what appears to be a science fiction novel titled Kimoreah by one Alan Markson. The cover is completely black with no illustrations. There is no publisher logo and no bar code. This might make it self-published except there appears to be no place online where you can go to purchase this book. There is no mention of it anywhere. Searching for the title and author only brings up a Xanga site that has not been updated in two years. And did I mention that the book is shrink wrapped in plastic? All this leads me to think that this was not intended to fall into strangers' hands.

I left a comment on the Xanga site but that's really all I can do at this point. I could care less about reading this particular book but I'd really like to solve the mystery that surrounds it.

That is really strange. I'd be curious too.

Here's hoping it's not a forbidden tome of arcane secrets. Thankfully I have not removed the plastic and opened it yet.

Perhaps It was a Final product to be shipped to a publisher?

Maybe an Authors copy?

This thought had occurred to me, which is why I'm attempting to contact the author. Although why it wound up in a rental car here, in a city not known for its publishing houses is beyond me.

maybe he was in a car accident? and had a car rental? And was on his way to the airport to get it published? I'm digging deep here. Or maybe..its some sort of ancient relic that will cause the end of the world if read from beginning to end while drinking a class of holy water and eating a whole box of nutty buddys..

Or..I could be bored at work?

Oh no, that actually pretty thoroughly covers the range of possibilities I had considered myself.

Wow, that's wild. Does sound like a self-publish/ARC, though.

I think so too but I am incapable of passing up such a tantalizing mystery.

The author has a facebook, as well.

EDIT: He also draws dinosaurs.

I almost stole this for a story, but I'd figure you could have it. I, however, have a book of poems like that. The publisher released the review copies, but pulled the book before it was even entered into their catalog.

There is a ton of story potential here, isn't there? I've had an itch to do something very metafictional and Stephen King-ish for a while. This could be it.
