It's a writing technique I stumbled on completely by accident. I was so angry at these two characters because I couldn't make their scene go anywhere for like, two weeks. So I just spat out this angry, violent, ridiculous lesbian S&M scene between them. After that, I was able to do the scene in one take.
My jaw about hit the floor when I found out "The Wrestler" is an Aronofsky film. No hallucinations, time warps, or Ellyn Burstyn? I can't get my head around that.
