It's a nice day. I'm sitting here eating some hamburgers which I grilled and watching Dune. And not that lame, weird version with Sting in it where Stilgar takes the boy-man (OUGH!) and peoples' eyes change color completely at random, but the kick-ass mini-series version.

Talked to my dad today. He's decided to buy me a box of the next L5R set that's coming out as a late birthday present. I wasn't going to be able to afford any for myself with the wedding coming up and had resigned myself to doing without for a while, so this was a very pleasant surprise. Now if somebody would just gift me a new job I would be all set, but that will come in time. I hope anyway. Meanwhile, back to Arrakis.

ahh, that wacko version with the poor cat having his blood sucked out? I'm sure it was very artistic and deep... me, I'm obviously much more superficial.

congrats for the bday present!

As I recall the cat was just being milked. In a bizarre homoerotic scene involving obese men with their nipples showing. Were I the cat, I think I'd have rather been bled.

The one that was on SciFi a few years ago? I got that on DVD, both it and Children...LOVE IT!

It was Dune as Dune should have been.

you know, I'm not sure I'd make it through the Dune movie. I Do love the Mini series, though. I might, however, like the Children one better :)

They're both amazing. I wonder if they'll make the final books into miniseries?

you don't think there's some sort of limit on the number of Dune minis they can really make? I think they would have done it already if they were going to. Actually, I'm kinda annoyed with SciFi (on so many subjects) not making any good mini series since... Peacekeeper Wars? They have begun ignoring the part where the minis are supposed to make up for the suck of the Saturday movies. /rant.

Apparently I'm ranting this morning. And I just got up! Maybe it's just that thing where I'm not a morning person, and I'm still cranky?? I don't know!!!

buenas dias

It was a three year gap between Dune and Children, so anything's possible. But I've pretty much lost hope at this point. We must make way for cinematic gold on par with Mansquito!*

I think the trouble is that the people running Sci Fi have absolutely no understanding of their audience and have no clue who their target demographic is. It's Sci Fi being financed and produced by people who don't like science fiction and know nothing about what it's fans want to see. Maybe they watched Star Wars once and think based on that that as long as something's got lots of noise and color sci-fi fans will watch it. That ain't so.

*I know I harp on Mansquito a lot. I know there have been worse movies for the channel than Mansquito. But somehow, no movie encapsulates everything that is wrong with their movies better than Mansquito does.

I had forgotten it was that long. was it really? it felt like one or two.

Mansquito. it definitely does encapsulate all that is wrong with SciFi Sat Movies. Right down to the terrifyingly awful name. Why would execs of any kind allow such crap? and PAY for it???

this is true, apparently. That would also explain why they think that wrestling is acceptable on SciFi. I still say that should be against some sort of charter unless the wrestlers shoot lighting out of their butts. There's a whole unbearable extended commercial break toward the end of Eureka every week where you have to sit through the ramp up to the wrestling. Do you think anybody actually watches that crap?

you've hit a sore spot with this. I'm so irritated with SciFi and their programming and crappy treatment of their shows that I have a hard time moving away from how much I want to send them nasty hate mail (or worse, but you can't speak of such things online)

Honestly, Sci Fi has been on a downward slant ever since they cancelled Farscape. They seemed to be putting things right with Battlestar Galactica, but I'm afraid they have gotten overconfident with that and a great show is going to get lost in the shuffle. Speaking of, I haven't seen the last episodes of Season 2 yet (will it ever come out on DVD?) Please tell me Dualla dies a painful explodey death.

I miss watching Stargate. Mel doesn't like the Stargates so I never get to watch them anymore.

The wrestling just proves my point about their cluelessness over their demographic. They must think science fiction only appeals to stupid young males who want maximum violence. I think their good shows probably draw more of a female viewership than anything. I know dozens of female Stargate fans. I'm the only male I know who likes the show.

The only movies they make that are any good are the ones that star Bruce Campbell. Because he KNOWS how bad they are and he plays their awfulness for laughs. If every actor in a made for Sci Fi movie did that, then we might have something.

I dunno. It's the thing where they think they have to have weekly Saturday movies of complete crap that really hurts them. Why not air SciFi movies that are already out there? it can't cost that much more. And even some of the really crap B-movies out there are better than what they churn out. Maybe there was a PTB added who cancelled Farscape like that, and they've just not gotten rid of her? It's the way that they cancel the shows that really pisses me off. Go for several seasons not knowing so writing a real ender every year, and then they tell you that you'll definitely have two more seasons so you make a nice big arc, so they cancel the show instead of giving you the promised next year. It's just crappy.

Sadly, Dualla does not meet with painful death. or even dismemberment. Such a tragedy.

You should tell Mel that you get to watch Stargate on grounds of it being the last season ever and you should get to see that live. *nods*

Their good shows *do* draw more females. And it's not like they would have to look very far to see that. But they seem to just not believe it because they've gotten it in their heads. Stupid bastards. And the funny thing, to me, is that there are Very few stupid young anybodys who watch SciFi. Mayhap the PTB should be required to attend a few cons? Maybe they would become terrified and have some sort of breakdown so that they will be replaced by actual SciFi fans. *dreams*

perhaps. There's only so much self-aware crap that you can watch and enjoy though. Bruce Campbell is definitely an exception to ...any rules. I'm conflicted about this weekend's Saturday movie because there's a star I really like that we never see, but I'd have to watch the movie. <---see? conflict.

So this is definately Stargate's last season? How did the whole Ori thing turn out last season?

From: [identity profile] elvinborn.livejournal.com
yep. SciFi cancelled it the Monday after they aired the 200th episode. Because they are giant bastards. (they could have waited a week). but Atlantis does at least get a fourth season. Scarily, one source suggested they would be absorbing some of the SG1 cast. I SOO hope not.

Ori: still going. I hate the Ori. But I think they could be more interesting once Morena Baccarin joins the mix.
