Comestables for thought

uberreinigerThe sinus infection I acquired during the weekend is moving from runny to congesty :( Tried some Sudafed. It stopped the runny but seems to have finished the converstion to congesty. Oh well. Also, when in the year since I last bought the stuff did Benadryl become the 31 flavors of decongestants? There used to be just a blue kind and a pink kind. You took the blue if you wanted your sinuses to unclog and the pink if you wanted nothing to happen. Now there's about five different kinds of both blue and pink. I just went with the Sudafed.
Anybody following the case on that guy in Afghanistan who narrowly escaped the death penalty for converting to Christianity? Yahoo said this morning that Italy's offered him asylum. I'm glad he's been delivered. Very glad. But I think it says something larger about our trying to "bring Democracy" to these heavily fundamentalist Islamic countries. They wanted to execute a man for changing religions. Clerics are marching in the streets protesting because he was not executed for changing religions. That's what we're trying to impose our values on, ladies and gentlemen. That's what we're trying to bring democracy to. Something tells me it's going to be a long time coming. Especially if you define "democracy" in the unspoken terms which seem to dominate our policy toward these places, that definition being "freedom to make the choices we want you to make."
Saw the President give a ten minute speech on the news this morning. It looked like some very ominous and serious announcement was about to be made with Rummsfeld, Condi, Cheney, and everyone else who's a name in the White House surrounding the podium looking grave. It was anti-climatic. Stay the course blah, blah, blah... Unity government blah, blah, blah... Terrorists can only win if we give up, etc. Nothing wrong with it per se, just the standard everyday Bushisms. What makes it worth mentioning is that the looks on Rummsfeld and Cheney's faces as they followed the President offstage were priceless, almost like they were saying "you made us get out of bed and get dressed for this?"
