I'm sleepy tonight, but it was worth it. [livejournal.com profile] kakita_shisumo and [livejournal.com profile] duende_grrl Took us out to dinner tonight to repay us for minding their pets last weekend. We had delicious gobs of Italian food up at The Red Zone. I am well sated and apt to acquire fatness. Mmm mmm. In other news, everything should be set to go at the apartment. We have utilities, cable and internet; all the necessities of life, really. All the ones you can't eat, anyway. Now we just have to get stuff in there. I can't wait. Today we're going to go down to Nebraska Furniture Mart and scout for couches and the like. I normally hate going any further into debt, but for actually owning my own furniture, I'll gladly make an exception.

And now, a news story in which bad things happen to bad people:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/01/10/teens.lynching/index.html

Please, no one lecture me on how the punishment is too harsh and how prison only makes bad people worse, yada yada. I'm a vengeful motherfucker who loves seeing bullies get their come uppance. As this rarely ever happens in our world, I reserve the right to take pleasure where I may. And really, how much worse is prison going to make them? Will it teach them to engage in five on one racial violence, as commonly happens? It probably would, if they weren't already doing it.

However, I do find it odd that South Carolina defines a lynching as a mob attack where the victim survives. I always thought lynchings were supposed to be lethal.

they only got 2-6 years?

That is bull shit. Well, at least the 18 yr old will be going to prison..That should be fun for him. The other only has another few months before he will be joining the pillow biting community.

2-6 for assault is fair, I think. A lot can happen to a skinny lil white boy on the Inside in two years.

well, I noticed that the victim didnt die. So, I suppose that is fair. But, you know...the nature of the crime should warrent more time.

Why? You know what it warrants to me--2-6 years, plus community service specifically related to the African American community for another 4. Prison doesn't instruct many good things. (Also, in my state, you'd rather be in adult prison than juvenile. I know this from family and from doing service work with prisoners. Children have less rights than adults, not more.)

However, I am glad that got that, I would be afraid that they would get much less.

I see nothing wrong with them getting prison the prison time they did. But hey, you know they don't come much more vengeful than me. I don't see how something like this can be simply called a "mistake." You did something you KNEW was wrong, and you decided to do something solely to injure if not maim/kill another person for your own macho amusement. Someone you DIDN'T EVEN KNOW, and thus, someone who couldn't have ever given you one ounce of justifiable reason to do dislike or do anything to them.

I bet they were sobbing in court. I think the one thing that always burns me up about how people react after they're in court (especially teenagers or other young offenders who say they just "messed up") is that you can rarely tell if honestly sorry for what they did and feel real remorse, or if they're only sorry now because they got caught and have to actually deal with the consequences like an adult. Too hateful and big for their britches is what these kids sounded like(when they committed the crime) to me, so I'm glad the courts could at least make sure that they have plenty of time to think about that "mistake" and think about how cool they were for even considering such a "mistake" to be good ol' fun.

Yeah, I like to see people punnished for crap like this. But at least I'm not making "mistakes" like this towards other people.

I saw the batch of them on CNN last night. I can't speak for their contrition, but the FEAR on their face was genuinely real. As it should be.

[livejournal.com profile] duendegrrl's name doesn't have an underscore in it.

I'm glad you liked the food! I find myself wondering idly how long it is until my birthday and thus, until my birthday dinner...

Their victim, Isaiah Clyburn, 17, said through his lawyer that he forgave them

That really moves me.

However, I do find it odd that South Carolina defines a lynching as a mob attack where the victim survives. I always thought lynchings were supposed to be lethal.

I don't. Think about why that would be the case? South Carolina scares this GA boy.

I won't lecture you since this is obviously aimed at me, who actually deals with both underhanded and prisoners on a fairly regular basis.

Nor do I think these kids didn't get what they deserve, they deserve worse. They need prison and then four years of community service to the African American community.

However, perhaps we'll discuss the difference between justice and vengence another time, friend, since you are already on the defensive. I don't care for those boys getting off one bit, but I do care for you, and so I'll respect your request.

Not aimed at you specifically. I thought of a few people I know whom I was sure wouldn't like the sentence. Most of them have surprised me, however, by not thinking it was harsh enough.

Little good is learned in prison, but it's not about learning. It's about justice. Now, I hope they don't get ass-raped, etc, but they need to serve their time and do pay something back to the community they attacked.

I can't believe they only got a few years for such a horrible crime! And I also agree that they should have to do their community service working with an African American community.

No no ... it was *second degree* lynching - I guess there are degrees now and that must be the one where the victim doesn't die. Don't you watch Law and Order????

:P

Of course I do! I can say "fruit of the poisonous tree!" and "leads to motive" with the best of 'em!

I think it should have been tried as a hate crime. I know that is a fuzzy line...I dont know. Really, what physically violent crime isn't committed because of hate? But you know what I mean, racially motivated or sexual orientation motivated. I don't know, just a thought.

I think they said on CNN the other night that lynching falls under hate crimes, but I'm not really sure.

I don't know how I feel about hate crime--I don't know that motivations should necessarily play into punishment, it makes judgement too hazy.

Yeah, I'm of a similar opinion. I see pros to it, but I'm hesitant to say "sure! That's a great idea!"
