You know what the Bush administration has brought with it of which I grow most weary? It's not taxes, it's not electronic surveillance, it's not wars... it's the overuse of the acronym POTUS on the internet. POTUS is short for President of the United States and is originally the Secret Service refers to their main charge while he is in their care. Yet in the last two years the general public has appropriated this acronym as their own. Usually, the more a particular writer hates the president, the more he uses the term "POTUS", probably because it sounds, I don't know, asinine and vaguely obscene, although admittedly nowhere near as bad as its sister acronym, SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States.)
But it could be so much worse, couldn't it? Just imagine if the founding fathers had decided against the office of president and even democracy itself, instead setting up a weird theocracy in which all executive decisions were decided by means of augury, scrying, oneiromancy, gyromancy, rune-casting, and horroscope drawing. Then the chief executive would likely be dubbed the Chief Oracle Interpretting the United States (COITUS). And who could forget the 1980 election in which a group of crazed Star Trek fans formed a political party whose sole aim was to prevent an invasion of America by Gene Roddenberry's fictional aliens. As I recal, they wanted to create a federal office called Kirk's Resistance of a Klingon United States (KROKUS.) Fortunately, Reagan won the election that year, saving our country from rule by a bizarre marriage of science fiction and butt rock. Our reprieve would not last, however. The movie Heavy Metal was released the following year.
