A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the tree,, but the young girl seated beneath it did not seem to notice. If I had known then what I know now of her, it would not have startled me in the least that this son of hers now chose to remind a D'Angeline courtesan that La Serenissima was a civilized nation while we were living in thatched hovels and scratching cheerfully in the dirt. Down there it was as if the world had become as flimsy as the muslin curtains at an old woman's window in the Via Gellia: as if the actual essence of the world were too old to care anymore about keeping up appearances.
