I was hoping to just get told what was wrong with me and sent on my merry way, but I guess life isn't that simple. I did get perscribed a couple of painkillers/muscle relaxers since he didn't think whatever my muscle problems were was very serious. So take the pills and go back in two weeks. Oh, and a hot compress for the cyst. That should be all it needs.

But, he just had to go get all freaked out about how I've never had my cholesterol checked, so I got blood drawn that's being tested for ulcer bacteria, cholesterol, and diabetes. Have I ever mentioned the colossal phobia I have of diabetes. He didn't say anything, but I can't imagine him wanting to test me unless he had a reason. I'm supposed to know Friday so now I'm freaking out again. Well, I guess one way or another, now I'll know once and for all whether I should be freaking out about it or not. But it's gonna be a long forty eight hours.

If he's drawing blood to check for cholesterol, why NOT check for whatever else he can? It's the same kind of thing with certain cars. If you have to replace the timing belt, you maight as well replace the water pump because you're already there...

I suppose you're right. And like I said, I've never been tested for any of it in my adult life so I suppose it makes sense he'd like to get the full spectrum.

type o said it so well.

just take some deep breaths and relax. there isnt anything you can do about the situation except let the doctors overpaid meat magicians do their thing. it sucks, but it sucks even worse to be obsessively worrying about it. And do i ever know about the hell of obsessively thinking things till you *do* have a reason to be worried.

speaking of worrying about stupid medical professionals and your results, when i was going to the doctor a bunch in July and even last month when i went for the regular gyno exam, the doctors always say "we'll only call you if there's something abnormal".. yet EVERY FUCKING TIME they have called me in the next couple days to tell me "everything is fine, but we forgot to bill you for blah blah.." or something like that. so i get this call, initially start freaking out and feel my stomach sinking, wondering how the hell something could be wrong and why they're calling.. only to find out that i'm fine. D'oh! i wish they'd quit scaring me like that.

Sometimes I think working around all these scary things so much that they become routine kind of skews medical peoples' sense of reality. They forget how terrifying it is for an ordinary person who doesn't deal with this stuff on a daily basis to get that phone call and not know what it means. Don't know if that's an excuse for the way they scare people, but I can see how easy it would be to fall into that.

in my ever so humble and always present opinion, i think that if you start treating people routinely in such a career, you probably shouldnt be in it ANY LONGER. I think this attitude tends to be more prevelant when dealing with doctors or other professionals who didnt really get into their field for the desire to helping others but rather for the knowledge that they can make a sweet career out of it(read, MONEY FOR ME!).
I think its equally as disgusting the way so many lawyers or people who work in family courts get a similar attitude. In such fields, you, as a professional are having to deal with people who are almost always in some sort of stressful situation: they're often forced to be there, are trying to see a child or salvage their crumbling life.. similar to medical situations where you have to be there or already have a problem you're worried about. It bothers me when the person with the job knew this going into their career choice and still treat their "clients" like they're just a dime a dozen(i use "client" beacuse i think that's how doctors see it too now.. money money money). If that's how they feel about their "clients", then perhaps they should get into a new line of work where that sort of attitude isnt as damaging and scary to those who depend on them.

Dr Visit

Again, a healthcare person's point of view:

Everyone should be checked once a year for high cholesterol after the age of 20. Don't fret that.

Did you go to the doctor's office on an empty stomach, like had not eaten in 8 hours?? If not, the diabetes screening is fucked up. Screening for diabetes is done while "fasting" and doesn't need to be done until age 45. Since you have just turned 28, it is an unnecessary test. It should be checked every 3 years after the age of 45 or if symptoms appear (severely increased appetite, unexplained weight gain, and urgency/frequency of urination). It isn't something that is just "thrown in". Sounds like the doctor wanted more money from your insurance company than he deserves. Diabetes is a disease of people over 50 or 60 for the most part (90%). The other 10% who get Type I very young just end up in the hospital before the age of 20 and that is how they find out - so you don't have that kind.

Hopefully, that diabetes knowledge puts your mind at ease. If not, I can go kick your doctor for ya!

Heh, I had donuts about three hours before the appointment and I TOLD them that. Had I known they were going to draw blood I would've fasted. The nurse asked me if I wanted to reschedule, but I figured the dr. knew best so I went ahead and let her do it.

I don't have any symptoms and there's not a single diabetic person anywhere in my near family. (and they're just about ALL over 45 and quite overweight.) I just get paranoid because I know so many diabetics, even a few my own age. But they all have heredity too. I dunno. I'm a worrier.

I was thinking that too, but I didn't want to sound like a cynic.

Some Numbers

From: [identity profile] drinkalizer.livejournal.com
I forgot to give you a number to know: 200!

200: if a random blood glucose level (sugar) is less than 200, you are great!

200: if a fasting cholesterol level is less than 200, you are also great!

(126: if a fasting blood glucose level is less than 126, you are great! If your sugar is high, don't worry. They have to retest it once and go from there.)

So since I wasn't fasting I'm gonna have to go through that damn test again? Oh great. *rolls eyes*

No, if the non-fasting cholesterol is less than 200, you are still great! :) And, it will be. I just had one recently after eating mass amounts of cookies. It is just usually 15 points higher after food I think. Don't worry! :)

Oh I could care less about the cholesterol. I meant the diabetes. But they knew going in what I'd eaten so if they press for it I'm just gonna say no thanks unless it's off-the-charts high. In which case, I would think I'd be having symptoms by now.

Don't fret!!!

I Have had my col. checked it's no big deal. Also high col. runs in my family so I probably should get it checked again. As for diabetes, I told don't be worried about it unless you have it run in your family, I think you said it doesn't, so don't worry. You will probably be just fine.

Yeah, I'm less worried about it now. I'm beginning to think, as others have suggested, that he was just trying to run as many tests as he could justify in order to get more money out of the whole deal.

The text message was a wonderful surprise and it made me feel really good. You're the first person ever to send me one! Nice to know I'm not the only one who worries about this stuff.
From: [identity profile] freyjas-child.livejournal.com
Hmm...I really hope this does all work out for ya. I haven't been talking with you long but I really don't like seeing you stressing out about stuff like this.
Hopefully for once the doctor is right about your muscles and all you need is the painkillers and relaxers. God knows how many times I've strained my arms or shoulders at work....took weeks to stop hurting. But then things happen like that when you have to keep using the same muscles night after night.
As for the cyst. I wish I could understand that...my mom used to get them...but all I can parrallel that to would be my acne:/ I had flawless skin up until I turned 18 and then boom....zits! Due to my dry skin...which doctors previous called eczema..it was hard to treat. Eventually when all the petty ridicule at school died down I just copped an "I don't give a shit" attitude and I've kept it ever since.
Doesn't matter what others think of you as long as you can accpet yourself. And sides...I think your a pretty cool guy and I've barely scratched the surface. So if anyone does say anything...ignore their punk asses...they don't know what they're missing~winks~
Oh ya...n' I hope it's only type 2 diabetes you'd have to deal with...cause that ones hella easy to keep in check. Diabetes runs in my family along with cancer and migraines...on both sides. So I've a minor fear of it too>.
From: [identity profile] uberreiniger.livejournal.com
Well I'd prefer no diabetes at all. That's what I'm aiming for. Thanks for all the kind words though. Having these cysts in the past has been really traumatic, but I'm finding it easier to cop and "I don't give a shit" attitude. The time before this one was only stressful because it flared up two weeks before a play I was in opened. I can grit my teeth and bear it in day to day life, but nobody wants their skin disorder showing up onstage.
