As I mentioned a little bit ago, I'm starting work on a Silent Hill fanfic. It was inspired by my trip to Andersonville and since part of the action takes place in the Civil War prison camp that once stood where the town of Silent Hill now stands, I've been doing a little bit more research on Andersonville. Lo and behond, I accidently found this:

Click on the little X'd out Ku Klux Klan guy in the upper left corner to read their views on slavery and racism. These guys genuinely seem to believe that they are not racist and after reading their musings thoroughly, I believe they genuinely do not think they are. Unfortunately, they do believe that slavery is good, natural and right, and even holy because it is in the Bible and if it is in the Bible, therefore God condones it. Oh, and it wasn't racist to hold the black people as slaves because white people have been slaves too in the past. And even if it was wrong, (which according to them, it wasn't,) it doesn't matter because people in the North had slaves too and they were meaner to theirs.

You know what's funny? I think I'd find them less sickening if they were white sheet-wearing, swastika-carving, cross-burning, pickup with a gun rack-driving, white supremacist good ol' boys. You can deal with those people because you understand them: they're stupid and have deliberately chosen not to be anything else. These guys are _smart_ and have deliberately chosen to use their intellect for an evil they genuinely believe to be good and to warp scripture to justify it.[/soap box]

Why go fanfic? Fanfiction is so cheap and easy: do something more creative. Use it as a jumping off point.

I was writing a script that basically remade the movie "Dolls," but at some point started turning it around until it wound up being its own film. The script never got finished but there's a LOT of high-quality writing in there.

Use Silent Hill as a springboard, but don't write fanfiction.

I've got plenty of serious writing projects. This one's just purely recreational; something amusing to share with friends. I generally don't care much for most fanfiction myself but I figure "oh, what the hell" I'll amuse myself with it just this once. And there's nothing stopping me from removing the SH references later on and reworking it into something original later on.

I've got an unfinished screenplay languishing on a disk too and I feel it's some of my best work. Writing screenplays is much harder than writing any other kind of fiction since all the coloring you'd normally do with narrative exposition must be done with dialogue. It definately requires a lot more practice than other types of writing, and I think all types of writing require constant practice. Then again, it just may not be my forte. Like I said, I've got some good stuff in that screenplay but it definately needs a lot of improving overall.
