Which women? The ones having acid thrown on their faces for talking to a man, or even for having been raped by a man? Or do you mean the women undergoing female circumcision as infants in unsanitary conditions using rusty blades and broken glass? No wait, you must mean the ones right here in the good ol' U.S. of A. where a woman can do the same job as a man, get paid the same as a man, dress how she wants, and live her life as she chooses, yet where she still can't go for a walk at night by herself, or sometimes even during the day. Or where a woman can rise to one of the most powerful political offices in the land, yet still have her face erased from a photograph by a backwards, patriarchal religious sect because the sight of her face is "immodest." You must mean those women. Yeah, they're doing good. We're treating 'em alright. No changes needed at this time.

That is very kind of you! Go ahead, I would be honored.

Wonderful icon too, by the way. That's one of my favorite films.

I was fortunate enough in my early 20's to get to play Jim in a production of The Glass Menagerie. It's not often you get to play your favorite character in your favorite play so I count it as one of the highlights of my life and of my time as a stage actor.

Thank you. I hadn't intended for my answer to get so angry from out of nowhere (or even bring up the infamous Hillary Clinton picture,) but I guess I had a lot of pent-up feelings and it was good to let them out.

I got cast in The Crucible once but the production was shut down before rehearsals even started due to in-fighting at the theatre where it was to be put on. Nothing like theatre community politics, let me tell ya. I'm glad you got to do it and had such a good experience. I know I cherish my Glass Menagerie days. And it's getting into autumn which is when we did it so I'm more than a little nostalgic for it right now. All my favorite acting memories seem to take place in the Fall for some reason.

Sorry, I lied.
I can also say that in one of my classes we watched videos on both female circumcision and the way women are treated in the middle east (I believe it was actually called Burning Brides, but I could be wrong) and it was just...well I felt sick after.

They showed a female circumcision of a little girl in Africa who I think was about two. The view of the actual surgery was blocked by the women doing it, but it was the most horrifying thing I've ever had to watch in my life.

I've heard it's not uncommon in those places to do it to women in their early teens too.

Date: 2011-08-28 07:22 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ravenbrenna.livejournal.com
They mentioned it on the video. I doubt they would be allowed to show it with teens even if they wanted to.

Thank you thank thank you. From my entire heart, thank you. And while we're at it, I'd like to see women get paid the same as men for doing the same job. Get promoted as often as men. Have undisputed ownership of our vaginas. And, hmm, how about we never have to hear 'You hit/fight/throw/cry/etc like a gril' unless it is a COMPLIMENT.

And, again, thank you. (hugs)

And why is a "pussy" someone who is weak? In my, uh, experience those muscles can actually be quite strong.

Date: 2011-08-29 06:32 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] para-xylene.livejournal.com
By that logic is that, then, why people we call assholes are considered strong? (wink)

Seriously. I HATE that. Really hate that whole 'don't be a pussy' thing.

By the way, I have this awesome t-shirt I got at a local shop in KC that has a depiction of a woman with a sword in her hand and blood all over the place. The caption reads: I fight like a girl.

It is my Mandragora Fecundis shirt. I even brought it to Japan.

Date: 2011-08-29 08:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] uberreiniger.livejournal.com
That's a shirt I would wear with pride! You should wear it on every stop of your Mandragora Fecundis book signing tour.

From: [identity profile] para-xylene.livejournal.com
I wonder if they still sell them or if the shop is still there? Normally I shy away from that sort of shirt, but the caption sold me instantly. I'll have to take a photo wearing it. And seriously, if there was a book-signing tour, I would totally wear it. It makes a great Apocalypse Woman shirt, too. :D

mhm, i can relate to the theatre politics thing; i was cast as estelle in no exit and it got shut down right after rehearsals started. i would totally love a chance to do that play in the future though <3
mhm, i get so nostalgic too :) lately been doing rocky horror and occasionally bellydancing (im so lazy about making it out to classes) <3 i intend to get more intensely into shows again though :)
