My weekends tend to be very lazy these days. However on Saturday we did go out to see [livejournal.com profile] duendegrrland [livejournal.com profile] zoriakaliand their bellydancing troupe perform at a local festival. Said festival was really just a bunch of hokey cowboy-themed attractions down in a local public park, but I'll brave just about anything to see some good bellydancing. Naturally the troupe put on an amazing performance despite having to put up with with the sound-checking rock band just a few hundred meters away and a creepy DJ who caused their performance to start late, we think because he was off using ice cream to entice children into his child molestor van. I tell ya, creepy is watching a bony, leathery, fifty year-old guy watching a group of bellydancers and then breathing into a microphone that he "wishes he could do that." But to hell with him, the dancing rocked!

La Llorona - An honest-to-goodness B-horror movie from Mexico in which a group of American college kids (probably on spring break or something,) unwisely decide to do drugs and have promiscuous sex in a cabin where a woman murdered her children. La Llorona takes us back to an era when horror films were simple morality plays: do not go off to engage in pre-marital sex in a dark, secluded place or undead monsters will fillet your head. It also takes us back to an era when a woman in gross make-up being pulled on a cart by a couple of stagehands to make it look like she's floating was still considered scary. The acting is terrible, the premise is weak, and the plot has holes you could drive a truck full of illegal aliens through... which means it is a lot of fun to watch. It even has a bona fide token black guy who says genuine token black guy stuff. ("Yo dawg!")

The Other Boleyn Girl - Pretty and well-acted movie about Henry VIII and his complicated love life. I was afraid this movie might have just been an excuse to get beautiful famous actors into gorgeous costumes but it really is a well-done picture that doesn't play too fast and loose with the actual history. If you love English history and Rennaisance courtly intrigue then it's your dream movie. Interesting side note: there's one scene where Henry, played by Eric Bana forcibly has his way with Anne Boleyn, played by Natalie Portman, and what do you know it really does look like what would happen if the Incredible Hulk were to have sex with Padme Amidala. All two of you sick crossover fanfic writers out there, your dreams have come true!

Romance & Cigarettes - A musical comedy directed by John Turturro and produced by the Coehn Brothers. It's about the trials and tribulations of a philandering construction worker and his dysfunctional family. Hilarious movie, but slows to a mind-numbing crawl in the last twenty minutes when they start trying to be all poignant and meaningful. Still it's a must see, especially if you enjoy watching Christopher Walken singing, dancing, and stabbing people or if you've ever wanted to see Susan Sarandon just beat the shit out of Kate Winslet. (And I know I have!)
