A likeable quotation.

Posted by someone in [livejournal.com profile] christianity:

Nothing indeed so disturbs the world as to see a man thoroughly happy in the Lord. It is not finding fault with the world that rouses its feelings, but the certainty that you have got a blessing to which they do not even pretend....
You are in trial, or difficulty, poor, persecuted, in prison, or dying; yet you are thoroughly happy. What can the world do with a man that nothing can conquer? It may oppose, insult, punish; but he only gives God thanks, and rejoices the more, and this without in the least making light of what is done. What can the world do with such a man? "This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith."

-William Kelly, Lectures on the Book of Judges

I think he really hits the nail on the head. I'd like to read the rest of this if for no other reason than to see how he ties such a serene, happy message into the Book of Judges: without a doubt one of the most violent, ugly, books in the Bible. Never read it? Okay, just how violent is it? Remember Kill Bill? It's more violent than that. Just how ugly is it? Remember Uma Thurman's feet in Kill Bill? It's uglier than that.

Thanks for sharing. I really like that as well. I think I'll have to go pick up this book too. It is true... nothing infurates people more than not being able to control or take something away from another that they hate. If you(the general *you*) can't make someone as miserable and hateful as you feel when you're trying to break them down, it becomes infinitely aggrivating. To think that all the horrors of the world cannot take away something so positive is definitely an amazing comfort.

A lot of people think that I'm down a lot because I am so vocal about my disdain for the injustice and evil so prevalent in this world.

The honest truth is that, yes, sometimes I do let it get too deep under my skin.

But it never fails that at some point I am reminded of the fact that this life is a vapor and that there will be judgement by a Holy and righteous God.

And that no matter what horrific headline or personal tragedy may come my way, that same God cares specifically for me.

What reason is there for me to truly fear about what man can do? They cannot take away the peace that passes all understanding or my salvation which is secure.

Thanks for posting that, man.

I'm glad you found it uplifting. It is good stuff.

Thanks for sharing, that was very inspiring.

It leaves me with a world of longing, though... I doubt my own faith would withstand everything like that -- and I don't really know what to do about it :(

Very interesting. I know I far too often let the little things get to me, and that serves neither God nor myself.
