I don't think it's that she thought she was ugly. I can't find the first article I read this morning now, but they quoted from her a few years ago explaining that she just preferred to be remembered the way she was. She said she felt the same way about old movie stars, preferring to think of them when they were in their prime. I think she recognized that she was in the business of creating fantasy and escape from reality for people and didn't want the realities of aging to intrude on it. I can respect that. The impression I get reading things she's said is that she was proud of what she had done, but at the same time didn't want to make a big deal about herself.
